Victoria Autumn Carnival Concludes With Friday Evening Racing at Moonee
A bit of Friday night thoroughbred racing at Moonee Valley will wrap up the autumn season of important races in Victoria.
The Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200 m w.f.a) will be the last Group 1 race of the season. It was won in 2017 by Silent Sedition, but that horse will not be back to defend the title.
She Will Reign, Secret Agenda, Hey Doc, Pariah and Rock Magic are the five with single digit quotes, but none of the runners on the list at the moment, ranging from $5 to $8, but there are also two priced at $10, four horses at $11 and one at $13. The final three with quotes on Ladbrokes are no worse than $41, so this is a race that could be wide open.
The other two significant races for the meeting are the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600 m mares w.f.a.) and the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600 m F SW + P).
Save for a pair of Group 3s that cap off the month of March at Caulfield, the rest of the big races belong to Sydney.
Winx will be going for her 24th consecutive win and her third consecutive Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500 m w.f.a.) at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney. Hugh Bowman will be aboard. He has been cleared by the medics of concussion symptoms from the bad fall he took at Randwick on March 10.
Winx is currently carrying a $1.10 quote, which seems reasonable; although a few punters might wish to turn back the clock at back her at the $1.26 starting price she carried for the race last year.
The Golden Slipper Stakes, the Ranvet Stakes, the Rosehill Guineas and The Galaxy are the other four Group 1 races at the meeting, as racing at Rosehill is at its peak through the end of the month before the carnival moves on to Royal Randwick for the first weekend of April.
