Two Group 1 Races at Morphettville Offer Big Prizes
Morphettville is holding a Group 1 race Saturday coming and the occasion will mark the first time a South Australian thoroughbred race will offer beyond $1 million in prizemoney.
Officially, the Race is the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes, a 1200 m weight-for-age for fillies and mares. The race has been co-opted by bookmaker UBET, which would like all the punters to think of the race as the UBET Classic. Either name is fine by us, just be aware that it is race 7 on the card and will follow the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, or if you prefer, the Schweppes Oaks, which is a 2010 m set-weight affair for 3YO fillies.
Just like the big courses to the north, Morphettville is soggy.
As for punting opportunities, the favourite is the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained English, coming out of the 11th barrier in a full field of currently 20.
Second in favourtism is Sheidel, jumping right alongside English, quoted by Sportsbet at $4.80. She might go lower as the impact of celebrity jockey Joao Moreira, considered the best in the world, becomes more apparent as the jump approaches. Sheidel was runner-up last year.
Adelaide local trainer Lloyd Kennewell has his top mare Viddora in the field, the recent winner of the Group 3 Irwin Stakes at Morphettville. He expressed confidence in his horse, but that confidence comes at the price of a $14.00 quote for the Sangster/UBET.
