Twenty Potential Stars of the Future Lining up For G1 Blue Diamond
Magic Millions 2YO Classic winning trainer Tony McEvoy believes that his Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes contender Oohood is equal in ability to his horse Sunlight.
Sunlight is the favourite for the Golden Slipper Stakes, but of the horses McEvoy intends to run in the Blue Diamond Stakes, three confirmed and two emergency runners, Oohood would be the one to pushSunlight the most in a track gallop.
“In pure ability there is not a lot between her and Sunlight,” McEvoy said in response to a query posed by Racenet.
“It’s a difficult question to say how close Oohood would get to Sunlight, but I’ve got no doubt she would get the closest of my Blue Diamond runners. The difference is that Sunlight stepped out, handled the pressure and handled everything we threw at her.Oohood has had three opportunities to do that and she hasn’t quite handled it, because of her racing style.”
So far as the betting market is concerned, Long Leaf enjoys the top position at $7, leading Oohood by a dollar. Plague Stone carries that same $8 quote as Oohood, but at this writing, still needs a rider.
The Blue Diamond Stakes market is wide open, as is to be expected of a race with juveniles in it.
Ennis Hill is a Market Mover, according to Ladbrokes, having shortened from $9.50 to $8.50.
The other youngsters that seem to have some backing are Prairie Fire and Kinky Boom, both listed at $9.
Oohood has drawn barrier 10, which puts her right in the middle of the field of 20, but she has yet to taste victory in three starts.
When McEvoy speaks of Oohood’s “racing style,” he is referring to her inability to get a good jump.
McEvoy also favours Kinky Boom and describes her as, “One of mine on the way up. “She hasn’t had the experience of Oohood or of Run Naan going in, but if she doesn’t make mistakes she can be right there,” he said.
