Trainer David Hayes Not Yet Ready to Capitulate to Houtzen
David Hayes expressed confidence in his two-year-old filly Madeenaty, who challenged winner Houtzen in the Magic Millions 1200 m 2YO Classic at Gold Coast, saying that he is eager to meet Houtzen in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes over the same distance at Rosehill in March.
“The winner was too good,” Hayes remarked subsequent to the race and said that chasing did not suit Madeenaty.
Hayes has taken his young charge back to Lindsay Park for a freshen up and prepared for a Golden Slipper target. He said that different riding tactics would be employed, with a bit more patience at the outset to save her for a burst at the finish.
Houtzen’s Magic Millions win has made her the darling of the TAB, where she has shortened to $6 from $15. Madeenaty has held steady at $15, although with two months until the Slipper, the market can and will change quite dramatically in all likelihood.
Houtzen’s trainer, Toby Edmonds, is busily trying to take advantage of the nine weeks between the two premier 2YO races to get her ready. He said she will be rested for a couple of weeks, and then begin her preparation, with a potential outing in the Group 2 Riesling Slipper Trial at Randwick.
