Tommy Berry Claims Chautauqua can Take Winx in George Ryder
We suppose it is necessary for a jockey to tout his horse, so it is hard to severely criticise Tommy Berry for expressing confidence that Chautauqua is capable of derailing Winx in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill this coming weekend.
The race will have a small field, but threatens to overshadow the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes, Sydney’s richest 2YO race, as punters will be focusing on Winx’s attempt to win her 16th straight race.
A little hype never hurt anyone, so the “experts” who are describing the rider as the big clash of the autumn portion of the 2016 – 2017 Australian thoroughbred racing season must be forgiven for their application of hyperbole to the race, citing not only Chautauqua, but also Black Heart Bart and Le Romain as legitimate contenders.
Objectively, what is needed if for Winx to have a horrible day and one of the others to run a career-defining race.
Berry is describing the Ryder as Chautauqua’s “toughest test to date,” hedging somewhat, but what would be the purpose of competing otherwise if the approach going into the race was that no other had the slightest wisp of a prayer of beating Chris Waller’s superstar that has, by the way, done very well on good tracks, where Flemington now is, lacking any up to date going stick ratings.
