Three Top Favourites for 2016 Darwin Cup Monday 1 August
The first day of the 2016 – 2017 thoroughbred racing season on Monday 1 August has not Group racing, but Northern Territory racing fans will still want to have a look at the Darwin Cup.
The final field has yet to be posted and the barrier draw has not yet taken place, but the current favourite is Lightinthenite at $4 according to Betstar.
The eight-year-old chestnut gelding has had 34 jumps and has seemed to stay away from firm tracks that entire time. He has eight wins in his career and won last year’s Darwin Cup with Hugh Bowman doing the steering.
Second favourite at $4.20 is 13-time winner Montalto, a bay mare from New Zealand. The six-year-old cannot be accused of loafing, as she has jumped 61 times. Her most recent win was in May, when she took the Alice Spring Cup. Carl Spry has been her jockey for the past four races, including the most recent win.
Finke is third favourite at $4.40. The three-year-old brown gelding from the stable of Gary Clark has eight wins from 12 starts. All eight of those wins came in his last eight races, so this is one hot runner. He won his last race in Darwin in July at 2000 m, so he has proven ability at Darwin Cup distance.
