Three Group 1 Races at Randwick Vie for Attention with Winx’s Run
Everyone seems to be talking about any of the Group 1 races at Randwick this weekend other than the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, as most seem to feel that issue has been decided due to the appearance of Winx.
That leaves three other Group 1 races that will be at least slightly more in doubt. Those are the Sydney Cup, a 3200 m open handicap for the stayers, the Australian Oaks for three-year-olds of the feminine gender and the 1600 metre weight-for-age Queen Of The Turf Stakes, which Winx would win, along with the Queen Elizabeth, but for Chris Waller’s steadfast refusal to run his mare twice in the same meeting.
Waller will have Foxplay as the second favourite in the Queen Of The Turf and she has drawn fairly well with the 10th barrier. With Kerrin McEvoy to steer her, Waller could conceivably come away from Randwick with a Group 1 double.
Waller has three horses running in the Sydney Cup, with Who Shot Thebarman leading the charge from the fourth barrier as another second favourite at $7.50, well behind the $2.60 quote of Big Duke.
Waller has not one runner in the James Boag’s Premium Australian Oaks, but he will be one busy trainer on the biggest day of autumn racing on the Sydney calendar.
Randwick track conditions are currently heavy. Who Shot The Barman has made six attempts in similar conditions, winning only once in a stakes race back in 2013.
