Ten Horse Field for Doomben Cup Features Big Names
Ten horses make up the field of the 2016 Group 1 Doomben Cup, the most significant weight-for-age race for the state of Queensland. The small field and the 2000 m distance of the race makes barrier positions less relevant than it would be for a shorter race with a larger field.
Trainer John O’Shea has two horses in the field: Haruki is the favourite and will jump from the first barrier, priced currently at $3.40, and It’s Somewhat coming out from barrier nine priced at $6.00 according to Sportsbet.
Chris Waller will field Spiritjim and Lady Le Fay, priced at $9 and $15, respectively. Waller is attempting to claim the Doomben Cup for the third time and add to his tally of 15 Group 1 races this season.
The other operation with two runners is the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes triumvirate. They will send Messene and Leebaz out at $12 and $17, respectively. John Hawkes has never claimed the Cup, but Leebaz has been in good form after winning the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes in his last start.
The formidable Freedman operation will have Our Ivanhowe steered by Kerrin McEvoy coming out of barrier six at $10. The Freemans tasted Group 1 success last week when Malaguerra won the BTC Cup.
