Sydney Thoroughbred Takedown Takes Out Group 1 Winterbottom
Takedown has won the 2016 Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot racecourse, providing trainer Gary Moore his first Group 1 win in Australia and paving the path for a campaign to pursue the riches of racing in Hong Kong.
Tim Clark was doing the steering for the 1200 m sprint. Takedown was recently invited to take part in the Hong Kong International Sprint, another 1200 m race at Sha Tin in Hong Kong, and apparently after seeing the way Takedown performed in the Winterbottom Stakes, will be aboard for the overseas race.
Trainer Gary Moore is the son of none other than legendary jockey George Cotton Fingers Moore and Takedown is by Stratum out of Aramea, with an international lineage that includes connections to U.S. notables Danehill and Danzig, along with Canada’s Northern Dancer and Kentucky bred U.S. Triple Crown winner Secretariat.
Moore only just, in the past two years, started training in Sydney, but he has shown capability in winning at Rosehill. As a rider, he won the most prestigious race in France, the Arc de Triomphe.
Of Tim Clark’s ride in the Winterbottom, Moore had high praise, comparing Clark to George Moore.
The pre-race favourite, Terravista, had a poor jump and was out of contention by the final turn for home, something rider Hugh Bowman describes as “disappointing.”
