Stewardship Trade Window is Open for Reardon Bailey Chadwick

It is truly challenging to provide relevant thoroughbred racing news at this time of year. Today, we are reduced to supplying a digest version of the happenings.

In the Who Cares department, Racing Queensland’s outgoing Chief Steward Allan Reardon is putting his hand up for the promotion for the Chief Steward position in Victoria that is being abandoned by Terry Bailey. Reardon has worked in Victoria before as Bailey’s deputy.

Peter Chadwick is taking over for Racing Queensland. Bailey is headed to Singapore to fill the post vacated by Bailey.

Elsewhere, trainer Michael Moroney is under investigation when Victorian stewards returned a positive report for the presence of a prohibited steroidal substance in the urine of Equestria following a win in a BM 64 at Bendigo back in March.

The stewards served Moroney with notice of the A-sample result a month later and they have advised Moroney of the B-sample findings.

Moroney has yet to be charged, but at least the PED was something that actually has some effect.

Thus far, Moroney, to the vest of our knowledge, has not issued a denial or an expression of amazement and ignorance.

This much is certain: With the number of instances of PED administration that come to light, there are probably 10 times as many that go undetected.

It is hard to fathom what must be going on in the heads of those who try to cheat. If winners are tested for winning a benchmark race at a country track, what is the point? No one drugs a horse in hopes that the poor creature will finish sixth rather than ninth.

We would suggest lifetime bans as a deterrent, but those who commit murder expect to get away with it, so capital punishment has never gotten in the way, so how would bans be effective when everyone knows that the chances of being caught are narrow?

Finally, there are some significant races going on at Royal Ascot, but even since Black Caviar went over and ran a Group 1 against two competitors, it is difficult to gin much interest in British racing.
