Spring Carnival Teasers Offer Group 2 and Group 3 Races
Group racing punters will be focused on Caulfield racecourse for the weekend coming.
The headline on the day is the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes, a 1400-metre weight-for-age race.
It will be the eighth race on the day. Two days out, the field stands at 11, with Mystic Journey being the favourite at $1.90 in a group that will include the nine-year-old senior citizen Hartnell, resuming after a break, moving down in class and no longer dealing with the spectre of Winx. His current price is $4.20 and he has been shortening as the jump approaches.
Cliff’s Edge ($7) and Fifty Stars ($9) are the other two in sing figures, but Kenedna is quoted at $13 and she is coming along with three wins from her last four tries, although the one that was not a win found her back in ninth.
Caulfield is also offering the Group 3 Vain Stakes, an 1100-metre sprint for 3YO Colts and Geldings run at set weights plus penalties, and the Group 3 Quezette Stakes, which is essentially the same race as the Vain Stakes, but for fillies.
Caulfield could obtain just eight runners for the race. The top line of the betting belongs to Bivouac steered from the third barrier by Hugh Bowman and currently $2.40.
Immediately following the Vain Stakes, race seven, the Quezette Stakes for 3YO fillies is fielding 13, led by Brooklyn Hustle ($4.80). Lyre is next at $5.50 and Exhilarates and Cheer Leader share the $7 price.
Both the Vain and Quezette Stakes, being for the younger horses, offer nice dividends in exchange for the lack of substantial form history.
There is one other Group race this weekend, the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Morphettville. This one is another sprint, 1200-metres, run under weight-for-age conditions.
The favourite is Scales of Justice ($2.10), with Despatch ($4.50) and Behemoth ($4.60) providing the competition.
