South Australian Derby at Morphettville Jumps Saturday
The Group 1 racing season is on life support, but punters who fancy the big races have the Group 1 South Australian Derby this weekend at Morphettville, a 2500 m stayers’ race for 3YOs run under set weight conditions.
Howard Be Thy Name won last year.
Odeon is one of the horses that will hold some appeal as he completed trackwork at Flemington yesterday before calling thoroughbred Uber to deliver him to South Australia.
According to one of his trainers, Simon Zahra, the outlook is nothing but positive. “He’s in good form. He’s had a faultless preparation and we think he’ll relish the 2500m. He’s drawn barrier five and he has Damian Lane on. If he’s good enough, he will be in the finish. Everything is spot-on for him.”
This will be Odeon’s fifth race of his current campaign and it was characterised by his trainer as his “grand final.”
The TAB reveals that Odeon is the favourite, currently at $3.50.
Matthew Ellerton shares training duties with Zahra and Damian Lane will be in the saddle for Saturday’s race. Odeon has 11 starts with four wins and two seconds.
Netherfield is priced at $6.50 and Ruthven is currently quoted at $7.50 in the field of 20.
