South Australian Derby and BTC Cup Highlight Upcoming Weekend
As the 2015-2016 racing season winds down, there are still quite a few Group level races remaining. This weekend, Doomben and Morphettville take centre stage with the Group 1 BTC Cup and the Group 1 South Australian Derby.
Doomben will also be the site of a Group 2 race, the Champagne Classic, and two Group 3 races, the BRC Chairman’s Handicap and the Rough Habit Plate. Various distances and conditions await punters who know their form.
Fell Swoop, Japonisme and Malaguerra are the top favourites for the BTC Cup, with the winner following in the hoof steps of former champions such as Black Caviar, Apache Cat and Strawberry Road.
The Australian Derby is the highlight of an eight-race programme this Saturday at Morphettville. This one has a final field of 17 three-year-old runners set to try 2500 m with Charlevoix the early favourite, followed closely by Cool Chap, who has drawn barrier 17 and Howard Be Thy Name. Tarquin is receiving some attention, but the real bargain may be Arcadia Dream.
The other seven races on the Morphettville card this weekend have two Listed races amongst them, but there is a fair amount of prize money at stake. The track is currently rated a soft (5).
