South Australia Turns Out to Cheer Native Son Kerrin McEvoy
Having spent the past month or so on a well-deserved victory tour subsequent to winning the Melbourne Cup aboard Almandin, Kerrin McEvoy is back in his home state of South Australia to continue his participation in this year’s Origin jockey series.
The inhabitants of his original stomping ground of Streaky Bay were enthusiastic supporters of McEvoy’s Melbourne Cup ride; backing him to such an extent that the local TAB came up short when it was time to settle.
McEvoy will be riding at Eagle Farm in support of the Origin series and was upbeat about the future of the programme.
“It’s gathering some nice momentum,” he said in a Radio TAB interview, speaking of the series. “It’s been spoken of in the jockeys’ room a bit and I’m pretty pleased to get the call up to represent South Australia with Dom Tourneur this weekend. It’s going to be a great challenge.”
The Eagle Farm based trainers have eagerly sought McEvoy’s services for the weekend meeting. He will take two rides in the Origin series, one on Game Pie and the other on Invitations. He also has a full card for six of the other races on the day, including one that was added as a fill-in role for suspended Paul Hammersley.
