Soft Track For Day 2 Of The Championships
When acceptances for day 2 of The Championships were finalised on Tuesday, Royal Randwick racecourse was rated heavy 8. The meteorologists indicate that things could dry out a bit on Wednesday with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures before cooling slightly with a chance for some light showers for Thursday, Friday and race day.
A ten-race card for the meeting means that the turf could be less than ideal for the later races. Five races prior to the Australian Oaks will mean approximately 350 hooves will have landed on the soft turf before the marquee Group 1 races start. By the time the Queen Elizabeth Stakes jumps, number nine on the card, Randwick could look more like a moto-cross track than a putting green.
In the Oaks, Happy Hannah came from well back in the Vinery, a good omen. Honesta should be in the mix as well as this race has been the target for her. Capella was a close second in the New Zealand Derby and looked in good form in the Australian Derby.
The Sydney Cup could belong to Who Shot Thebarman, even with top weight of 57 kg. Libran also deserves some attention coming off three consecutive wins and has the staying ability to deal with the 3200 metres.
In the Coolmore, Zanbagh likes wet tracks and Azkadellia looked good in the Doncaster.
The QE Stakes looks like a prime set up for Preferment and Criterion should not be ignored.
