Soaked Randwick Course Threatens Guineas Day
The big wet has descended on Sydney, with major implications for Saturday’s meeting at Royal Randwick racecourse.
Some trainers are pondering switching to Flemington, one of those being James Cummings, who was set to field Prized Icon in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, but may choose to send the 3YO brown colt to run in the Group 1 Australian Guineas at headquarters.
The wet weather has spurred rampant talk that the Randwick meeting may be washed out altogether, or perhaps transferred to Canterbury.
One of the main attractions to Saturday’s Randwick meeting was a battle of undefeated two-year-olds She Will Reign and Houtzen in the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial.
She Will Reign trainer Gary Portelli was pondering a backup plan should Randwick be too wet to run on. It is not so urgent a matter, however, as Ben Melham has indicated that She Will Reign is in good from and ready to go in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes later this month, so if he were to err in some fashion, it would seem that it would be on the side of caution.
According to Wayne Hawkes, Chautauqua will run this weekend in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap if the Randwick meeting is held, but he has taken the contingency of also entering the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes at Canterbury in Canberra.
