Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes Lacks Drama
In Saturday’s George Main Stakes (1600 m) at Randwick, Winx will be attempting to become the first three-time winner of the Group 1 feature race.
Kingston Town (1981 – 82), Regal Rhythm (1967 – 68), Count Radiant (1964 – 65) and Shannon (1946 – 47) are the horses to have won twice since the race was initiated in 1945.
As is occasionally the case in weight-for-age races, a horse might have multiple wins with one or more years intervening, but that does not apply to the George Main Stakes, aka the Colgate Optic White Stakes.
Other notable winners were More Joyous in 2010, Lonhro in 2003, Shogun Lodge in 1999, Vo Rogue in 1989, Emancipation in 1983, Imposing in 1979 and Baguette in 1971.
So, the record for number of wins could fall, the record for consecutive wins could fall and Winx could notch her 20th Group 1 race win.
Chris Waller says she is ready.
“Very happy with the way everything has gone over the past four weeks,” Waller said. She’s in picture perfect condition. Having four weeks between runs is pretty straight forward now but it’ four weeks to worry about things.”
Maybe Waller has a punt on GWS or the Rabbitohs. Maybe he is worried about when the concluding season of Game of Thrones will air. It is hard to imagine him worrying about his super mare.
Winx has drawn the third barrier for the race and the other seven horses in the field are all horses that Winx has beaten in the past, often by embarrassing margins. Ladbrokes is paying $1.10 to her backers. Only Le Romain ($13), Unforgotten ($13), Egg Tart ($21) and Ace High ($26) have even the remotest chance of winning. It would seem they are in the race for the $94,000 that goes to second finisher.
Five of the horses are from Waller’s stables. Perhaps he is worried that he is running out of horses with which to fill a field.
There were 63 nominations for the race just yesterday, but when put-up-or-shut-up time rolled around, things got pretty quiet.
