Robert Sangster Stakes and Australasian Oaks at Morpehttville
Punters are accustomed to being made to wait for the quality races to jump at most meetings, but when the attention of those punters turns to Morphettville in SA on Saturday, 7 May; the top races lead the card.
First up is the UBET Classic, known to traditionalists as the Robert Sangster Stakes. The 1200 m Group 1 race will award a total of $400,000 to the stakes winners of the race, all the way from first place and $256,000 down to 10th place at $4,000. The event is w.f.a. for fillies and mares. Twenty runners will take part and there have been 34 nominations. David Hayes and Tom Dabernig could have as many as four gallopers in the field. This far out, Sportsbet favours Don’t Doubt Mama and Petits Filous at $7.
Following the UBET Classic, the Schweppes Oaks, aka. Australasian Oaks, will feature identical prize money, but the winner and rest of the field will have to cover 2000 m. The race is at set-weights for three-year-old fillies. The race attracted 36 nominations. This field is limited to 16 gallopers. Hayes and Dabernig have five nominations and John O’Shea, three. Arcadia Dream is top-favourite at $4.60, followed by Abbey Marie and Silent Sedition at $6.50.
Two Group 2 races follow, and then a Group 3 event, one Listed race and a final two Black Type.
