Rich Racing Action at Gold Coast in January Millions Festival
Thoroughbred racing fans will not have long to wait for three major racing events in early 2018.
Getting the year off to a start on the very first day of 2018, the Perth Cup (2400 m) at Ascot Racecourse in Western Australia features Group 2 open handicap staying action. Many of the horses in the field will be some of those who did well in the Group 2 C B Cox Stakes (210o m).
Stayers in the Perth Cup not only have to cover 2400 m, but they run up a bit on an incline in the final 400 metres, so a premium is placed fitness, form and endurance.
Last year’s race was won by Star Exhibit.
The two other races that will attract the attention of racing fans will both take place on January 12 at Gold Coast.
The races are the Magic Million 3YO Guineas and the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. The races are held in conjunction with the Magic Millions Sale and offer a chance to see the horses that may go on to dominate the metro tracks all around the country.
The 2YO Classic is the first of the two races. It is run over 1200 metres, but some of the two-year-olds who run may eventually become stayers.
Capitalist won in 2016 before going on to fill the Magic Millions – Golden Slipper double. Houtzen was the winner in the 2017 edition. The $2 million in prizemoney means that trainers will be keen to have their promising juveniles in peak form.
An hour after the jump of the Classic, the 3YO Guineas will take centre stage. This far out, there are plenty of nominations for the race. It also has prizemoney of $2 million, but the horses will cover 1400 metres.
The Magic Millions meetings also feature another five races with $1 million in prizemoney, so Gold Coast will be truly golden in January of 2018.
