Redzel Surprise Winner of Doomben 10,000
Winning the Doomben 10,000 has put Redzel on the thoroughbred horseracing radar for The Everest, New South Wales transparent attempt to displace the Melbourne Cup as the richest horse race in Australia.
Redzel trainer Peter Snowden says that the persistent underachiever is coming into his own as a sprinter. Redzel led for the majority of the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, finally showing the aptitude to transfer the ability he has always demonstrated on the training track to the actual racecourse.
The four-year-old product of sire Stitzel and dam Mill rich has 17 jumps on his racing resume and seems competent in various track conditions, but had only two Group 3 victories prior to winning at Doomben for his first Group 1 win.
The Doomben win was Redzel’s seventh and it pushed his earnings past the $1 million milestone, but it may be premature to tip him for The Everest, five months into the future.
The Everest will be the world’s richest turf race, and will be held on October 14 at Royal Randwick. Odds markets are open, with Chautauqua being a clear favourite at $4.60.
Redzel is far back at $26.00, but the Snowdens will also field Russian Revolution in the race, currently quoted at $11.
