Randwick Spring Carnival Closes with Group 3 The Nivision
Most of the top riders are in Melbourne for the spring carnival and although the turnout for this week’s meeting is likely to be well under the throng that showed up for The Everest, there is still racing going on at Randwick this weekend.
Therefore, when trainer Peter Snowden needed a hoop for Saturday’s Group 3 The Nivision (1200 m), the final group race of Randwick’s spring carnival, he looked north to Queensland and found a jockey with whom he has enjoyed past success, Damian Browne.
It turned out that Browne was available, so he will head south to try and break his duck at Randwick, where he has jumped 36 times between there and other Sydney metro tracks without a win.
Browne does have 13 Group 1 wins to his credit, so there is no doubt concerning his credentials. Of course, six of those wins came when he was handed the reins to Buffering.
Peter Snowden, who has for some time been training with his son Paul, has combined with Browne for two Blue Diamond Stakes wins in 2014 with Earthquake and in 2015 with Pride of Dubai.
Browne will ride Nancy for Snowden. The six-year-old bay mare by the USA’s Big Brown from Shalimar Sky has had an adequate, if not spectacular career, and has been ridden by some big names, mainly Tommy Berry, but also Kerrin McEvoy and Blake Shinn.
She was given a chance in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara at Doomben in June, but she could manage no more than ninth out of 16. Her biggest win to date came in 2016 when McEvoy brought her home ahead of Two Blue and Press Report in the Group 3 Godolphin Crown (1300 m).
Nancy is carrying a price of $8 for the mares’ only race.
Browne has booked three other rides for Saturday, another for the Snowdens, and one for Chris Waller and one for David Pfeiffer.
