Race of the Year at Gosford Day Prior to Magic Millions Classics

Anyone having a look at Saturday’s Magic Million 2YO Classic at Gold Coast might wonder at the absence of the name of Damien Oliver on the riders’ list, but Oliver does not have a ride in the race and will be found the day prior on a rare trip to do some riding at Gosford on the triangular track located 76 km north of Sydney.

He has three rides on the card, which will double his total at Gosford for the 44-year-old Victorian champion jockey.

He will pilot Sense of Occasion in the Listed 2100 m Gosford Gold Cup. He will be aboard Ball Of Muscle in the Listed 1200 m Takeover Target Stakes and he will steer Khutulun in the Group 3 1600 m Belle Of The Turf Stakes. As best as we can tell, this is the only Group level race of the year at Gosford. It was elevated from Listed to Group 3 status in 2014 and has been run since 1988. There have been no truly notable winners, although a win here often elevates the breeding prospects of the fillies and mares taking part. Plenty of top-flight hoops have taken part in the race, though, including James McDonald and Brenton Avdulla.

Oliver was there last year, where he rode Sweet Fire to a sixth place finish.
