Pursuit of 16th Straight by Winx Could Overshadow Golden Slipper
The Coolmore Classic meeting turned into a Winx exhibition recently, when the majority of a crowd of over 20,000 at Rosehill Gardens paid rapt attention as the Mare of the Century (Hopefully not being premature, considering the century has a long way to go; then again, Makybe Diva and Black Caviar are both of this century) came out between races just to have a gallop.
She is going to be running in the $1 million Group 1 George Ryder Stakes this coming weekend, and poses the distinct possibility that she will direct attention away from the world’s richest two-year-old race in Sydney, the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
The George Ryder has few interested in taking Winx on; the field is going to be small, with only Le Romain and Chautauqua realistically capable, if the most generous sense of that word, pose any sort of threat to Winx.
Most of the spectators will be watching for a chance to view a history-making 16th straight win out of Winx.
History of a different sort will take place in April when Perth’s premier course, Ascot, will stage a meeting on Good Friday. The premier drawing card will be the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes.
