Pike Clear Victor in Perth Western Australia Jockeys Premiership
Perth star jockey William Pike is planning to head to Darwin for a run in the Darwin Cup next month, where it is anticipated that he may attract a few more spectators than might otherwise be expected.
Pike came close to winning 200 races this season and Goldolphin, along with trainer Mick Hickmott of South Australia, has retained Pike to ride Lieder. Hickmott prepared the Darwin Cup winner, Canny Ballad, last year.
This will be the first time Pike has ridden at Darwin’s Fannie Bay racecourse. “I’m pretty excited to pick this ride up actually,” Pike told TAB Radio. “It was a bit of a strange phone call I wasn’t expecting but Michael won the Cup last year, the horse gets in with 54(kg) and his lead-up run last start was quite good. It’s nice to get a phone call from people outside of your circles and that they’re thinking of you.”
Riding in Western Australia is not exactly Hugh Bowman territory, just do not mention that to any in the vicinity of Perth. Just 31, Pike has amassed almost $61 million in prize money, riding predominantly for Grant Williams.
Pike won the Perth Cup on Real Love in 2015 and on Crown Prosecutor in 2005. He has two Western Australia Derby victories to his credit, the first in 2006 on Cats Fun and the second on Dreamaway in 2011. He also won the Railway Stakes on Elite Belle in 2014.
Pike easily took this year’s Western Australia Jockeys’ Premiership with 106 wins, well more than double the 44 wins recorded by Jarrad Noske. Pike’s 21.4 percent strike rate is also well clear on Noske’s 13.6 percent and Pike out worked all the others on the list with 496 starts through July 27. He has eight rides arranged for Belmont, so he will conclude the season with well over 500 rides, provided at least four of his mounts make the jump.
