Palentino Draws Backers in Lead Up to Group 1 Doncaster Mile
As we move closer to the jump of Saturday’s Group 1 1600 m Star Doncaster Mile at Randwick, prices have shifted to some extent, so this is meant to be an update of the most recent quotes.
Le Romain remains the favourite at $6.00, but Hauraki has lengthened to $10.00 from the previous quote of $8.50 on Sportsbet. Chris Waller’s Mccreery has gone from $8.50 to $9.50.
Palentino has shortened from $13.00 to $10.00, so Darren Weir’s charge, which last won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington earlier in the month, must be gaining some favour. The four-year-old horse has tasted Group 1 success previously, winning the Australian Guineas from a pair of New Zealanders, Tarzino and Risque in March of 2016, and the Makybe Diva Stakes in September of 2016.
Count on Weir’s horse being in good form for the Doncaster and count on Weir with the savvy to steer clear of Winx.
Patrick Webster’s Happy Clapper has held steady at $9.50.
One suspected reason for the lengthening of Hauraki would be the Randwick track conditions, which are currently given as soft, something for which Hauraki has previously shown disdain, although the five-year-old gelding did beat Le Romain on a heavy track at Randwick in the Group 2 Tramway in September of 2016.
