Order of St George Wins 2016 Ascot Gold Cup
Order of St George won the Ascot Gold Cup. Ridden by Ryan Moore, the victory was relatively easy one that immediately generated speculation of a Melbourne Cup attempt by St George.
The Ascot Gold Cup at about 4,000 m is Europe’s equivalent to the Melbourne Cup. To date, only one horse, 1993’s Vintage Crop is the only one to have posted a victory in the Race That Stops a Nation.
Fifteen European gallopers have tried, with only two placings to show for it. The great stayer Yeats, four-time winner of the Ascot Gold Cup from 2006 to 2009, ran seventh in the 2006 Melbourne Cup. It is widely thought that Yeats could have handily beaten the two top finishers, winner Delta Blues and second placer Pop Rock with little trouble had those two raced in Europe.
No winner of the Ascot has won the Melbourne Cup in the same year and 1995 favourite Double Trigger finished well back. It has been 13 years since a Gold Cup winner Jardine’s Lookout placed in the Melbourne Cup.
The implied information here is that tipping an Ascot Gold Cup winner to do well in the Melbourne Cup is not the best of propositions for punters who enjoy speculating in the futures market.
