Off Season Racing News to Fuel Anticipation for Autumn Racing

Winx is back to work.

According to The Daily Telegraph, she returned unannounced to her trainer Chris Waller’s stables at Rosehill. We think that it was simply a case of Waller not saying anything, not one of Winx wandering out of her spelling paddock and heading to the barn at Rosehill.

The speculation machine is gearing up over whether Waller will take her to Royal Ascot. We say, fine, let her go to England and beat Hartnell there. That is not accurate, actually. We say; so long as you have the best racehorse in the world, let the world come to you. So long as the Aussie horses are sent to grovel for the approval of the royals, Australian thoroughbred racing will continue to enjoy second-class citizen status.

In other racing news, trainer Jenny Graham was instructed to take Victorem back to the barriers to deal with a bucking issue. He went off a couple of strides after the star of the TAB Highway and lost considerable ground before scoring a narrow win.

Ben Melham has been booked by trainer Gary Portelli to ride Secret Lady in the Magic Millions. She will have a lead-up race at Randwick on December 30.

It used to be a simple matter to replace some grass at a racecourse, but since the Eagle Farm debacle, news that turf work at Kensington has been completed was met with some wariness. The total rebuild of Randwick’s inner course is receiving a degree of scrutiny that might otherwise have been missing. The track should be ready near the end of April, but it will not be rushed.

John O’Shea also had to do a rebuild after splitting from Goldolphin in April of 2017. He has a promising colt named Irish Bet that was brilliant in winning the Inglis Nurseryand has the potential to follow Mossfun and She Will Reign to fill the Inglis/Golden Slipper double.

Finally, we bid adieu to Luxbet. It was not so much a lack of trade, but a case of a merger between Tabcorp and Tatts Group.

Punters have been notified that December 22 is the last day Luxbet will accept bets and that they have until January 19 to recover their funds.

After which, what, the new corporation gets to keep the money?
