Only Nine Picked Winx to Repeat Following 2016 Cox Plate
Failing to listen to us is generally a sound policy to follow, but we warned all you punters out there to get your plunk on Winx while the plunking was good.
Sixth thousand have backed her to win the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040 m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, October 28, but only nine paid heed and got their money down when she was offering the best price, which was just minutes after she won the Cox Plate in 2016.
Those with the foresight, along with the resources, have the mighty mare at $4. Those who procrastinated will have to settle for the $1.16 some of the online bookmakers, including Ladbrokes, are offering. Wait any longer and it might be Phar Lap odds ($1.07 1931), which when bookie commissions are added in, is at best a break-even proposition.
Royal Symphony is next at $16 and we cannot help but feel that the 7.5 kg weight advantage Winx is spotting the three-year-old colt is the reason for that price.
Proven performersGailo Chop ($19), Humidor ($20) and Folkswood ($20) are the only in the nine-horse field even remotely close in price. Folkswood will jump alongside Winx, so he and jockey Kerrin McEvoy might have the best view of the race, although Winx typically loiters in the early stages of the race, so it may be her watching Folkswood.
Of the nine who backed Winx right after she won in 2016, none of which we are claiming to have taken the bet as the result of anything we said, one has $2,000 on her and might come home $8,000 richer at the end of the race, less about $400 in fees.
Other punters have put on major bets, one of above $100,000, one of $60,000 and one of the interesting figure of $43,478.
One wise person even put an each way bet on Winx, just to be properly conservative.
Over 23,000 wise souls took her when she was still offering the princely odds of $1.50. Many bets placed this week will be paid at $1.15.
