Musical Saddles Hands Brenton Avdulla Chautauqua Reins for The Everest
It is still more than a month in the future and it has never been once run, but already, it is being called Everest Day.
Odd then, that it does not yet appear on the racing calendars of some of the sites that purport to be reliable, authoritative sources on upcoming high-level races.
Oh, well. No one ever said life would be always fair.
One fact that we do have in our possession, however, is that The Everest will be run for the first time at Royal Randwick on October 14 and that one of the favourites, Chautauqua, will be ridden by Brenton Avdulla.
Avdulla, you may recall, had the Sydney metro premiership firmly in his grasp until a late season suspension handed the title to Hugh Bowman. With more than a month until The Everest, we can only wish Avdulla good fortune and hope that should he suffer the misfortune of another suspension, it will be over in time for the Chautauqua ride.
Avdulla has been on Chautauqua before, but only for trials. Tommy Berry is the jockey who has regularly ridden the big grey for races in Sydney, but he could not obtain a release from his obligations with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Another Chautauqua rider of note, Dwayne Dunn, will be working at Caulfield on that day, riding Royal Symphony in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.
Hugh Bowman was solicited, but he is up in the air as to where and when Winx will next jump, but she might be in the Group 3 Craven Plate on the same day and the same track, which would mean Bowman will be there. Winx could also try the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes in Melbourne, but the possibility that she will try neither one is a real possibility.
Does this all sound like something of a Game of Saddles plot line?
Chautauqua is the early $4.60 favourite in wagering for The Everest and he has won the past three Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick over the same distance.
Our question: What would Chris Waller be thinking by putting Winx in the Group 3 Craven Plate? Surely, he is not afraid of some competition for her, is he?
