Music Magnate Wins Doomben 10,000 Under McEvoy
In the course of winning the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 aboard Music Magnate in Brisbane on Saturday, jockey Kerrin McEvoy became the first rider since Graham Cook in 1975 to complete the Doomben Cup – Doomben 10,000 double in the same season.
He won the Doomben Cup aboard Our Invanhowe the week previous. He can join Cook as the winner of the big three of Brisbane racing if he and Music Magnate can take the Stradbroke Handicap. This far out, Music Magnate is priced at $9, but has been and should continue shortening as the jump gets closer.
McEvoy would join the elite company of Cook and he would be the second to complete the treble in one year. He did join George “Cotton Fingers” Moore as the only other rider besides Cook to win the double.
McEvoy could also sweep the entire card of Group 1 Brisbane races in the modern era if he can win the Queensland Derby and the BTC Cup at some point.
In winning the Doomben 10,000, McEvoy and Music Magnate got out ahead much sooner than planned and even came back to stay on the pace in what turned out to be a most strategically run race.
