Mongolian Khan to Possible Face Winx in QE Stakes
Based on the belief that his poor showing in the BMW in Rosehill may have been more the result of interference, along with a clean bill of health from a veterinary examination, New Zealand trainer Murray Baker advised stewards that Mongolian Khan might be running in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 9.
Mongolian Khan was almost in a different time zone from BMW winner Preferment, finishing 14 lengths back despite jumping as third favourite.
Baker is planning to fly the Tasman to Sydney to have a look at the horse and make a decision. Mongolian Khan is not currently on the list of nominations, or at least has been given no odds by the bookies at this point.
Baker might also be attempting to evaluate his chances, since Winx ($1.60 Sportsbet) has almost been backed to the point where punters will be charged to place a wager on him.
Baker has a QE Stakes victory to his credit. He prepared It’s A Dundeel in 2014 and the horse earned almost $2.5 million from a race where almost half the runners were entered by Chris Waller. Winx is another product of Waller’s operation and the horse seemingly can win without breaking a sweat every time he is tried.
