Melbourne Cup Winner Almandin Next Up Sandown (Zipping) Classic
Plenty of the horses that ran in the 2016 Melbourne Cup will be running at Sandown racecourse for the 2400 m Group 2 Sandown Classic this weekend, including Melbourne Cup winner Almandin. The race is also known as the Zipping Classic and is one of the last significant races in Victoria in 2016.
Almandin owner Lloyd Williams is also going to run Bondi Beach that is now a charge of Robert Hickmott, along with Assign and Gallante. Bondi Beach, at 13th, was the best of the finishers from Williams’ stables.
He intends to watch the four do track work before making his final decision on which will run. His horse Zipping won the race four times consecutively 2007 – 2010. Williams has also won in 2003 with Legible and in 2012 with Tanby.
It might be time to rename the race the Lloyd Williams Classic.
Betwixt the fourth win by Zipping in 2010 and Tanby in 2012, another Melbourne Cup winner, Americain, won in 2011. Interestingly, even though an American horse, Americain did not win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes or the Belmont Stakes, the three races that make up the Triple Crown of U.S. racing.
The 2015 winner was Who Shot Thebarman. Since 1963, when the race ceased being the Williamstown Cup, Zipping is the only horse with multiple wins.
Almandin is the favourite for the upcoming running, at $2.70 fixed on the TAB.
