Macintosh May Skip 2400 m Group 1 Queensland Derby for 1600 m Group II Queensland Guineas
Mackintosh trainer Chris Waller is exploring options regarding whether he will try the horse in the 2016 Group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm or put the Kiwi galloper in the Group II Queensland Guineas instead.
Waller seems to have pragmatic motivations. The Derby is worth double the Guineas from the prizemoney perspective, but he has expressed some doubt regarding Mackintosh’s stamina over 2400 m, even though he beat 12 competitors in the 2200 m Group III Grand Prix Stakes.
The Queensland Derby had been the intended goal and Mackintosh has been the favourite according to the bookmakers, but Waller is thinking things through thoroughly before deciding where to run the thoroughbred.
If he does decide to abandon running Mackintosh in the Derby, he will still have Encosta Line in the field and possibly Mulitfacets and Rodrico as well.
Waller has also confirmed that he will have Delectation and Counterattack in the field for the Stradbroke Handicap. They will contend with the Freedman prepared BTC Cup victor Malaguerra, which will be ridden by Hugh Bowman, who has never before attempted the Stradbroke.
