Kris Lees Likes Chances for The Everest with 25% of the Field
The 12 runners for the upcoming run of The Everest are a tightly bunched group, so far as the early betting picture goes.
From shortest to longest, the market range is $7 to $17.
Redzel, Vega Magic and Trapeze Artist currently share the top line at $7 on the BetEasy website. Shoals and Santa Ana Lane are next at $8, followed by just In Her Time at $9.
US Navy Flag and Viddora carry $11 quotes. Brave Smash and Graff are on $13, with four days remaining, followed by Home Of The Brave at $15.
One of the more accomplished horses in the field, Le Romain, is at the bottom on $17.
Punters who like to back favourites face the conundrum of which of the three top liners to pick. Those who look for a longshot to pad the bank will not find much on which to have a plunge.
Randwick was running Soft 7 for last weekend’s meeting and trainer Kris Lees is of the opinion that a heavy track will play in the favour of Le Romain.
“I would say Le Romain would be most advantaged by a heavy track however I don’t see it being as a negative for any of them,” Lees said.“At 1200m with the sting out of the track, it probably brings Le Romain back to the speedsters a touch. He’s also Group I winner at 1300m beating Chautauqua on a heavy track.”
Lees will also have In Her Time and Graff in the field of 12 for The Everest. All three are on the high end of the price quotes, but those markets will undoubtedly shift and it is hard to envision Le Romain going out as the outsider and the barrier draw at the Sydney Opera House may shake things up a bit.
Lees also has horses in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600 m), Smart Melody and El Dorado Dreaming, along with several others in stakes races in Sydney and Melbourne.
