Kingsford – Smith Cup Offers Weir’s Black Herat Bart Redemption
All racing punters eyes are directed to the north this weekend, well, punters whose eyes are located south of Brisbane and Eagle Farm at any rate, for the last Group 1 race of the month.
All the other quality races are on the same meeting, with the juveniles contesting the Group 2 QTC Sires Produce Stakes. There are also five Group 3 races on the card.
The Group 1 race is the BTC Cup, a 1350 m weight-for-age jewel that demands the most from sprinters and requires the milers to get up and running quickly, lest they run out of turf.
If you go onto your favourite bookie’s website, you will find the race called the Kingsford – Smith Cup.
It took Malaguerra just under one minute and nine seconds to win the race in 2016. The 12-time race winner, a 5YO bay gelding trained by Peter Gelagotis, edged Dothraki by a short head and Japonisme by just over one length.
Black Heart Bart enjoys early favouritsm; even though Weir’s competent horse started favourite in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville Saturday past and finished a 2-1/2 length seventh place.
If all the currently nominated horses were to take part, it would be a huge field, but when the final field is announced and barriers drawn, odd could shift a bit in the direction of Clearly Innocent, Derryn and Counterattack.
