Kerrin McEvoy to Miss Doncaster for Checking Mongolian Khan
Stewards flagged Kerrin McEvoy with careless riding in the Group 1 BMW. He pleaded not guilty, something he says he has never done before, to charges that he tightened runners to his inside, checking Mongolian Khan.
McEvoy has been suspended for five meetings and will be eligible to return April 8.
The new whip rules that went into effect at the start of the year are being enforced with enthusiasm. All three place getters in the BMW were subjected to charges for excessive use of the stick.
Each additional stroke cost Preferment’s jockey Hugh Bowman $1,000 for a $2,000 penalty. Who Shot Thebarman jockey Blake Shin got a discount for the same offense, paying only $1,000.
The third place finisher Jason Collett aboard Grand Marshal left the track before the stewards caught up with him, but he will also have to answer questions for the number of time he hit his horse before the final 100 m.
Kathy O’Hara also ran afoul of the whip rules, but she got a much better deal than Bowman did, attracting only an $800 fine for three extra strokes on Single Gaze in the Vinery Stud Stakes. Apparently, it was Ladies’ day, or something. Stewards did tack on an additional $400, however, for saluting as she crossed the line.
