Kementari is as Good as a Wink to Beat Winx at her own Race
“We have great respect for all the opposition in the race but when it does come down to it, we just feel like he is a sporting chance of giving Winx a scare,” Kementari trainer James Cummings told RSN.
A sporting chance to give Winx a scare?
Is that what it has come to?
We appreciate that Cummings was in full thoroughbred trainer-jargon mode.
Cummings offered additional reasons why Winx should be scared.
“I’d always forecast that he was going to be significantly better second-up, he loves the 1400m, he races terrific at Randwick and coming off his gallops on Tuesday we just had to give ourselves the opportunity so we decided to accept this morning.”
Some observers previously maintained that Cummings having Kementari in the Winx Stakes was a tactical bluff and that the actual or better target for the son of Lonrho was the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, but Cummings has decided to forge ahead.
The plan is for Kementari to sneak up behind Winx during barrier loading and yell “Boo.” That would seem to be the only way that Winx might blinx.
Beating Winx would supply an exponential increase to Kementari’s stud fee.
“I think it is fair to say that a colt that has his stallion profile already, if he was able to pull off the impossible, the impact of that would be astronomical,” Cummings said.
We say exponential, Cummings says astronomical.
Let’s call the whole thing off.
Winx has drawn perfectly and will come out of the fifth barrier. She also has a 1.5 kg weight advantage, not that it will be needed, although we are hesitant to say so, for fear of jinxing Winx.
Winx offers the top price of $1.16, compared to $7 for Kementari. A quick look at Ladbrokes shows that they will give punters just $1.12
Chris Waller, perhaps in the interest of having Randwick renamed after him, will field five of the 11 horses in the field, but none of the others has a better chance than the $18 for D’Argento. Six of the runners have triple digit quotes.
So far as we know, there have been no death threats directed at Kementari.
