Japanese Marialite Earns Invite to 2016 Caulfield Cup
Winning an upset victory in the Group 1 Takarazuka Kinen over 2200m at Japan’s Hanshin racecourse has earned a 2016 Caulfield Cup spot for Marialite, winner also of the 2015 Queens Elizabeth II Cup.
Starting into the home straight worse than midfield, Marialite and jockey Masayoshi Ebina took the scenic outside route to overtake Cox Plate invitee Kitasan Black and held off the late surge of favourite Duramente by a neck.
Last year’s race winner, Lovely Day, wound up fourth.
Duramente was dismounted and driven off in the horse ambulance. It was later revealed that the favourite was lame in the off fore leg.
Recent races have seemed to offer plenty of soft ground and that soft ground at Shanin, according to her jockey, was well-suited to her. Ebina also credited a good draw as well. He also passed along credit to Marialite’s connections for having the patience to wait for the five-year-old daughter of Deep Impact.
Marialite’s historical form suggests that she does all right on firm tracks as well, so it could be a case of Ebina avoiding big noting the horse ahead of the Caulfield Cup.
Overall, the mare has started 17 times dating back to January 2014, accumulating six wins and seven placings on Japanese racecourses.
