Jameka Make 2016 Caulfield Cup Look Like Casual BT
One down, two to go for the thoroughbred ranks.
As expected, Jameka took the Group 1 Caulfield Cup without much trouble and is facing, in all probability, as much as two additional kilograms for the Melbourne Cup.
She could probably be given 4 kilograms, given the ease with which she opened a three-length gap betwixt herself and the other Caulfield Cup pretenders. Er, contenders.
Jameka currently has 52 kg and even if that should be elevated to 54 kg, she will still be 4 kg below the 58 kg mighty Makybe Diva lugged over two mile at Flemington to win her third Melbourne Cup crown.
No Melbourne Cup winning mare has ever had to shoulder more, with the previous mark held by 1988’s Empire Rose at 53.5 kg.
There is precedent for Jameka being handed an extra 2 kg.
There is also precedent in that extra going to a Cups Double producer, as that was the extra allotted to Ethereal in 2001.
In 1991, Let’s Elope was treated much more genteelly, winning the Caulfield Cup with 48.5 kg before having that lifted to 51 kg for her Melbourne Cup win.
Less than a week ago, Jameka was offered at $10 to win the Melbourne Cup, double the $5 offer for Hartnell, but now, the two are equal at $5 for TAB Fixed Odds.
