Holiday Racing at Ascot and Doomben Offers Group Races
There is not a lot of Group racing taking place in December, but there are a few races that might offer a good opportunity to clean out all of the free bets and bonus bets if any of those are the types that expire on the last day of the year.
On the day after Christmas, Randwick will stage the Group 3 Summer Cup, a 2000 m open handicap. This Australian Turf Club race dates back to 1890. The most notable winner was Super Impose in 1988 and I’m Imposing, no relation to Super Impose, was a British horse shipped to Australia in 2010 that won the race in 2013 and 2014.
There are four quality races on New Year’s Eve, two at Ascot in WA and two at Doomben in Brisbane.
The main attraction at Ascot is the Group 2 Perth Cup, a 2400 m staying race run under quality handicap conditions dating back to 1887. A well-known name in racing circles, P.A. Connolly, supplied the winning runner from 1904 to 1908, and then added two more in 1910 and 1922.
The Group 3 La Trice Classic is an 1800 m set weight plus penalty race for fillies and mares. It is a relatively new race.
In Doomben, punters can take in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate, a sprint for three-year-olds run at set weights that had its start in 2006, or the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes for the two-year-olds.
