Healthy Dividends to be Found at Caulfield Saturday Coming
Versatile punters, that is, those who care about getting the best value for their wagering efforts, will be paying at least some attention to the racing in Victoria this weekend.
Just a little, with some saved to devote some to the goings on at Randwick, where Winx will take on a field of 10 would-be giant slayers in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400 m).
Caulfield will host the Group 2 WFA PB Lawrence Stakes (1400 m), the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100 m) for three-year-old colts and geldings run under set weight plus penalty conditions and the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100 m) for three-year-old fillies at set weights plus penalties.
Hartnell won the PB Lawrence last year from $2.80. He is back to defend, but he will carry second-favourite pricing at $6 and will have to contend with Grunt, the $5.50 favourite.
Some of the others in the field include familiar names, such as Black Heart Bart ($7.50), Humidor ($16), Boom Time ($31) and Miss Gunpowder ($21).
All in all, it is a nice field of 16 and whoever can pick the winner can expect a much more respectable dividend than the Randwick punters who back Winx. We have seen her as low as $1.12, so punters for the Winx Stakes had better have some combinations going in they are going to make any money.
The Group 3 Vain Stakes is the first of the three features at Caulfield come Saturday. Jukebox won last year. He backed that with a second in the Danehill Stakes and another second in the Blue Sapphire Stakes, but has failed to advance.
Tony Nicconi is the runaway $2.40 favourite.
The Group 3 Quezette Stakes follows, with a deep field, currently at 19, led by $3.20 favourite Sunlight. She has run five good races and over $2 million in prizemoney, so her $3.20 price looks like a bargain and she has drawn well.
