Hartnell’s Best Hopes in Chipping Norton Depend on Winx Misfortune

Sports history is rife with examples of stars who were simply in the right place at the wrong time.

Larger-than-life characters manage to suck every last bit of breathable oxygen out of a room, leaving only carbon dioxide for others.

In the 90s, Tiger Woods managed to relegate Phil Mickelson and many other fine golfers to the role of also-rans. In today’s NBA, LeBron demands all the attention. In the music entertainment world, anyone not named Adele need not bother showing up.

Australian thoroughbred horseracing is and has not been immune, either. Currently, a very proficient galloper named Hartnell is reduced to seeking Group 1 races lacing the participation of Winx in order to secure wins.

In the past, Hay List was continuous second fiddle to Black Caviar.

That, at least, is the comparison fill-in jockey Brenton Avdulla uses as he prepares to take Hartnell to the track Saturday in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes. Avdulla will be taking over for the injured James Doyle and has publicly expressed the opinion that in order for Hartnell to get the better of Winx, the super mare will have to be the victim of misfortune of one kind or another.

Winx will be seeking to win her 15th consecutive race.
