Hartnell Written Off Against Winx and Jameka
The boys cannot catch a break.
With the biggest races of the spring campaign looming large on the racing calendar, those being the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup, Hartnell, the Goldolphin British import, is being dismissed as not up to a challenge from Winx in the Cox Plate or Jameka in the Caulfield Cup, if we can be forgiven for speculating on those matchups at this early juncture.
This, even though when the six-year-old bay gelding met Jameka just over a fortnight ago, he almost seemed to be toying with this year’s winner of the Caulfield Cup.
Winx beat him well in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes in mid-August and in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes in February, as well as in last year’s Cox Plate, so Hartnell admittedly has no precedent for winning against Winx in the three times they have gone head-to-head.
Hartnell was an early Melbourne Cup favourite not all that long ago, and then was matched by Jameka briefly at $5.00, but has since reclaimed a $1.00 advantage against Jameka, with the final field yet to be settled.
For backers of Hartnell, he seems to be one of those runners that are hard to fathom and presents a challenge to know, when getting punts on, which Hartnell will make an appearance.
