Hartnell Wins Group 1 Turnbull Stakes With Flemington Stroll
Racing at Flemington the weekend past had big boots to fill following an AFL Grand Final that was a cracker by any standard.
Fill those boots they did, however, and the big story line that emerged is the consensus opinion that Winx now has a bona fide rival in Hartnell.
This is based on the result in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, where Hartnell was practically walking at the end. If such a thing is conceivable, Hartnell at Flemington surpassed Hartnell of Randwick.
Some are suggesting that it is the Winx camp is the one experiencing anxiety of a Cox Plate with Hartnell in the mix. The two horses met earlier in a first up race won by Winx, but they have managed to stay away from each other for the Sydney leg of the spring season.
In the Turnbull, Hartnell appeared to be biding his time, even looking for a space in the car park, during the middle of the race, where he cruised along nonchalantly behind the leaders. When it came to the straight, he turned it up a notch and beat a not by any means incompetent Jameeka by over three lengths, with third-placer Tally back another three.
