Guide to the Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick
We are as happy as anyone to see Group racing for the 2018 – 2019 Australian Thoroughbred racing season resume on Saturday at Randwick when the Group 2 Missile Stakes is the seventh race of the meeting.
It looks like 10 horses will line up for the symbolic start of The Everest carnival, as the ATC would like us to call their spring racing.
Kementari is the $2 favourite, coming out of the fourth barrier carrying Glyn Schofield. James Cummings’ entire is four-years-old and we believe that since he is a son on Lonrho, the connections are not subjecting him to the procedure that is often the fate of many stallions.
He seems in good form, other than his 10th running in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap. He took on Winx in his prior jump in the Group 1 George Ryder, placing third. He won the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes and the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes at Warwick Farm.
Next comes Pierata out of the eighth slot with James McDonald aboard. Ladbrokes has a price of $4 on Gregory Hickman’s entire. He has won more money than Kementari, but has yet to win at Group 1 level.
Music Magnate will start one slot inside Pierata and carry Hugh Bowman for Bjorn Baker. The quote on him says $8.50, but with Bowman aboard and a decent barrier, he cannot be ruled out, as he has won at Group 1 level, that being The Doomben 10,000, although that was in 2016.
She Will Reign is listed at $9, has Kerrin McEvoy to steer, but she is on the inside and has not lived up to expectations, even though she was given one of the 12 slots in The Everest last year and has won both the Silver and Golden Slipper Stakes. Her three outings prior produced nothing better than a fifth place finish.
