Group Racing Set to Resume in Earnest Starting This Weekend
There are four good quality races set to jump this weekend.
The Group 2 Australia Stakes, a 1200 m weight for age sprint, will be the big feature at Moonee Valley. In historical perspective, the race ran for the first time in 1989. It was won by none other than Black Caviar, twice, in 2010 and 2012. Black Heart Bart, Malguerra and Chetwood are the favourites.
Rosehill has the Group 2 Expressway Stakes, another 1200 m weight for age race, along with the 1100 m Group 3 Widden Stakes for fillies and the 1100 m Canonbury Stakes for colts and geldings.
It is a thin field of six runners that will jump in the Expressway, with Music Magnate being the short favourite at $1.90, followed by Kuro and Ball of Muscle.
After this weekend, thoroughbred racing at the top levels gets underway in earnest in February, with six Group 1 races on the calendar. Caulfield, Flemington, Randwick and Warwick Farms will all be hosting major races.
On the Winx front, trainer Chris Waller has conceded that his super mare may have to travel in order to get the recognition she deserves, but he reiterated that she will be running in Australia for 2017 with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and a third Cox Plate being her prime targets.
We personally would like to see Winx throw down the horseshoe and dare California Chrome and Accolade dare to meet her in the Cox.
