Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield Offers Quality Field
Here is the latest news on the next-to-last Group race of the 2017 – 2018 Australian thoroughbred racing season, the Group 3 Ladbrokes Sir John Monash Stakes (1100 m) at Caulfield this coming Saturday.
The favourite is Jukebox. At the moment we checked, about two days prior to the race, Jukebox was quoted at $3.30 by Ladbrokes and $3.20 by Neds. The three-year-old colt will be ridden by Craig Williams. Ciaron Maher handles the preparations. Jukebox will come out of the sixth slot with 58 kg and has been shortened as the race draws closer.
Voodoo Lad is next, quoted at $4 by Ladbrokes and $4.50 by Neds, followed by Crystal Dreamer with the same $4.50 from Neds, but $4.60 on the Ladbrokes site.
Jukebox has been spelling for the better part of a year, 36 weeks to be more precise. He won his last time at the same track and has shown to be a proven performer first up.
Voodoo Lad is coming off a poor showing in the Stradbroke Handicap, but he could be one to watch if he has a dry track and he seems to be adept when racing at Caulfield.
Crystal Dreamer is back after a 19-week break and the six-year-old gelding seems to do okay when rested and has won three times at Caulfield, but his odds have lengthened since the market opened. He is a reliable placer, however, with a 75 percent strike rate.
Ashlor, $6.5 Ladbrokes and $6 Neds, cannot be overlooked entirely, as he is also a solid performer and seems to be in great form this prep. He won his last start at Caulfield, which seems to be something of a pattern for this race field.
Inn Keeper may be another one to watch. He is being ridden by Linda Meech and she seems to be having a career season. Ladbrokes has him at $6 and Neds is offering him at $7. He has made nine starts and won seven times, so Symon Wilde seems to have prepared this horse well.
