Group 2 Villiers Stakes Main Attraction Saturday at Randwick
Owing as much to its place on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar as anything else, the Group 2 Villiers Stake at Randwick this weekend has a history of compiling a strong field of milers. If you want to race in December, at 1600 metres under open handicap conditions, it is really the only game in town so far as racing in NSW is concerned.
Seventeen gallopers are left out of the original field of 18 after Loyalty Man was scratched. According to Sportsbet, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bolt’s Fabrizio is the one to beat, currently at a fixed price of $3.10 coming out of barrier 11.
Others that are in the picture are James Cummings’ High Midnight out of gate seven, priced at $8.00 and having a 2.5 kg advantage on the favourite, and Hazzabeel, Ciaron Maher’s charge, coming out of barrier six at $8.50, 1 kg lighter than Fabrizio.
Sense of Occasion has attracted some money and been halved from as high as $81 down to $41 and several others have firmed as the jump gets closer.
There are nine races on the card for the day and if the recent weather trend in Sydney holds firm, anyone going out to Randwick should seek shade wherever it is found and to wear some SPF 2000.
