Group 1 Turnbull Stakes Field Down to Winx Plus Six
Can the field for Saturday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington shrink any further?
There may be some punters in the audience who heeded our suggestion to take the $1.20 Winx was offering, when was it, yesterday? Any who waited have seen her drop to as low as $1.14 from the online bookmakers.
That price will go down further if the field is reduced again. It is now down to seven, and only Humidor is anywhere near the picture for the race in two days’ time.
The situation has devolved to the point where any horse that runs is going to get prizemoney, enough to cover the entry fee, so it pays to risk a horse’s ego for the sake of a guaranteed profit.
The chances of an upset are slim. About the only possibility of which we can conceive is if Winx were to draw a barrier at Caulfield. She has drawn the second slot at Flemington, however, and with a couple of days before the race, the field could drop down to Winx, Humidor and Ventura Storm.
Racing Victoria obviously is not happy with the size of the field. They have been on the phone begging for horses to at least make the first 50 metres of the Turnbull Stakes present the façade of a horse race. There is already grumbling about the presence of Skyfire in the race. The 6YO’s greatest claim to fame is his sire Testa Rossa.
The current Winx quote of $1.16 by CrownBet and William Hill is surprisingly good, given that the last three times Winx ran in Sydney, she offered nothing above $1.12.
Hartnell won the race in 2016, with Jameka second and Tally third, but none of those three cared to show for this year, as trainers have universally discovered to have come down with a serious case of WAS (Winx Avoidance Syndrome).
