Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes Pits Hayes Against Snowdens
Trainer David Hayes is primed to expect the unexpected regarding the field in Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.
Catchy is the current favourite, but if one of her stablemates were to catch her, it would not catch Hayes unprepared. Tulip, Formality and Will’s Bid will be in the field, but with two-year-olds, anything can happen, especially in a large field such as this edition of the Blue Diamond has attracted.
The fact that she is just two, and not a well-known entity, would seem to somewhat explain why even as the favourite, Catchy is priced at $5.00 on Sportsbet, even though she has not been beaten in her three starts, including the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude on the 11th of this month.
Hayes’ filly Tulip is offering $6.50, tied with one of the Peter and Paul Snowden runners, Pariah, a colt that has a first in a Group 3 race at Rosehill, the Canonbury Stakes, where she beat Menari and Malahat for the win, and a second in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield.
With a field the size expected to jump in the Blue diamond, anything can happen, since at 1200 metres, there is not a lot of time to recover for any runner that sets a foot wrong.
